The two owners that stood out the most were Hal and John Thornton. Hal was a very cruel and inexperienced owner. John Thornton was a very smart and compassionate man as he cared for humans and animals. Even though both of them had differences, they also had similarities. These characters were similar as they both tested Buck’s abilities. Although Hal and Thornton were very different characters, they both showed how their character and actions can affect the surrounding creatures.

Hal was a very cold-blooded and inexperienced man. John Thornton stated, “I tell you straight, I would risk my carcass on that ice for all the gold in Alaska.” Hal was told not to cross the river, but he did not listen which lead to him and the sled dogs dying in the river. Hal was very stubborn as he never listened to the beneficial advice the people gave him. As stated in chapter 5, page 101, “They hastened it by overfeeding, bringing the day near when underfeeding would commerce.” His inexperience lead to the sled dogs starving. Hal did not know how to control the food supply as he would sometimes give the dogs too much food which lead to the dog having less food later on. This lack of knowledge caused the sled dogs to suffer greatly, even though they had done nothing

Kidnapped and beaten into submission, Buck learns quickly that these men are his masters and not his owners. The punishments are brutal but they don’t just some from those that own him now but even his sled dog teammates who teach him, in a less than sympathetic manner, how to work as a sled dog. Buck is quick to learn all the ways of a sled dog, and soon begins to change in attitude caused by those he has encountered. “He overcomes terrible hardships and engages in fierce battles with both men and other animals, displaying a high level of courage and cunning, as when he attacks a bull moose…

IfThe Call of the Wild is a story about ultimately achieving mastery over a foreign, primal world, that mastery is achieved only through separation from the group and independent survival. Throughout much of the story, Buck is serving a master or a pack; even as a leader he is carrying out someone else’s commands and is responsible for the well-being of the group. In many ways, then, when John Thornton cuts Buck free from his harness, he is also beginning the process of Buck’s separation from a pack mentality. Although Buck continues to serve Thornton, his yearnings for a solitary life in the wild eventually overcome…
