Pericarditis is when there is swelling and irritation of the pericardium. The pericardium is the thin sac like layer of the heart. The pericardium protects the heart from infections and malignancy. It also stops the heart from increasing in size from extra blood being pumped into the heart.

This disease can cause very sharp and irritating pain to the chest. Other signs of pericarditis are heavy coughing, extra swallowing, and very deep breathing. B the way there are other unique symptoms like for example pain in the back or neck and anxiety while lying flat. In some people there can be bulges in the feet, ankles, or legs. This is a sign of constrictive pericarditis. which is more serious than regular pericarditis. which is when
