Papa John’s was started in 1984 by John Schnatter in the broom closet of his father’s business after John sold his 1972 Camaro to help save his father’s business from bankruptcy (Papa John’s, 2017). The fact that John was able to make sacrifices to save his father’s business and create his own business within a broom closet shows his dedication to his family and passion. The first Papa John’s restaurant was opened in 1985 in Jeffersonville, Indiana with a focus on quality, then by 1991, there were 100 restaurants, 500 restaurants by 1994, and 2,000 restaurants by 1999 (Papa John’s, 2017). It appears that once John moved from the broom closet and opened his first restaurant, growth started slow but then began to speed up to a more rapid pace. In 2001, Papa John’s was the first pizza chain to offer online ordering and by 2010 their e-commerce sales in the United States alone were $2 billion (Papa John’s, 2017). …show more content…
In 2006, Papa John’s was awarded the Guinness World Record for their seven-year streak in customer satisfaction ranking and in 2014 Papa John’s celebrated their 30th anniversary with quality still as their core value (Papa John’s, 2017). These accomplishments show how important quality and customer service have been to Papa John’s since the day it began in the broom closet. In 2017, there are now over 5,000 restaurants and they have continued to be voted number one in customer satisfaction as recent as 2016 by staying committed to John’s vision (Papa John’s, 2017).
