Publix has been in business since the early 1930’s and it has grown into one of the largest grocery chains in the eastern U.S. According to Brian Solomon of Forbes (2013), Publix is the seventh-largest private company in the U.S and is the largest employee owned company in America. One of the keys to the longevity Publix has been that they provide impeccable customer service above quality and price. This focus on customer service is what sets them apart from their many competitors, such as Wal-Mart because that company focuses on providing a lower price over service. When a customer walks into a Publix, they are immediately engaged by an associate with a warm greeting and are asked if they need any assistance with their shopping. The company is competitive and has taken customers from other supermarkets chains like Winn-Dixie, which contributed to its recent filing for bankruptcy. Another aspect of Publix is that the company gives all employees who have put in a 1,000 work hours and a year of employment 8.5% of their total pay in the form of Publix stock. According to Susan Kim of ABC News, one of these is that it has been a part of many families’ lives for over 80 years. This show that customer loyalty can be a contributing factor in the growth of any customer oriented business. Another unique selling point is its emphasis on customer service, which is show through their highly trained associates that are always there to help a customer find what they need. Additionally, Publix offers group and private classes on cooking through their Aprons Cooking School program at eight locations throughout Florida and one in Georgia.
