Nature focuses on the biological, what biologically makes us who were are, whereas nurture focuses on how we were raised. OCD for Dan was probably something he was born with, however some of his actions may have been nurture related. Many times his mom would accidently enable him and his OCD. “One night, when Gary repeatedly reported the basketball game’s score to Dan because Dan couldn’t bring himself to watch television, I finally hit me: we were enabling our son, hurting him instead of helping” (Singer and Gillihan, 2015, p. 44). Because Dan could not watch television, they were trying to help him, but really they were not, they needed convince him to come see the television instead. ERP is Expose and Response Prevention, meaning that the person exposes themselves to something they have been avoiding, such as touching a book, or sitting in a car. Then they start to use those items such as reading or driving, these are things they were terrified to do, and they work their way to using or doing those things ( Singer and Gillihan, 2015, p. 55).

Systematic Desensitization. Slowly exposing them to anxiety provoking stimuli and taight relaxation techniques to conquer the fear.

An example of ERP in his daily life was going to the bookstore after he got out of St. Josephs. He could hardly go in before and then he hesitantly got out of the car and went in. He was in for about an hour and came out and said “I bought a book” ( Singer and Gillihan, 2015, p. 117). He was able to one go inside but two he was able to buy something, two things that were very hard.
