In this paper I will explain the differences between different regulatory agencies in nursing and how they pertain to my practice in nursing. I will also discuss examples of provisions from the nursing code of ethics along with the traits from the code of ethics which I bring to my interdisciplinary healthcare team. Patricia Benner’s nursing theory and Florence Nightingale have also influenced my professional practice in several aspects. I will discuss these aspects along with different scenerios in which I have safeguarded different ethical principles in my practice.
A. Functional Differences
There are different agencies in nursing which pertain to all nurses. The first are different Professional Nursing Organizations (PNO). …show more content…
The Code of Ethics says that the nurse maintains compassionate and caring relationships with colleagues and others (Code of Ethics, 2010). I care for my patients and their family members as I would like to be cared for, and I am often looked to when my colleagues are in need of a friendly helping hand. I became a nurse because I care for people and wanted to make a difference in their lives.
I also act as a mentor. A mentor is defined as “someone who teaches or gives help and advise to a less experienced and often younger person” (Mentor, 2014). I serve as a primary preceptor and mentor for new employees. I help prepare them for working on the floor, educating them on policies and procedures along with the general flow of the floor. After the nurse completes their orientation to the floor I continue to help them grow by teaching and guiding them as the need arises.
Another trait derived from the Code of Ethics is that of trust. As stated in the Code of Ethics, collaboration between all parties requires mutual trust, recognition, and respect (Code of Ethics, 2010). I instill trust in others because I am honest and ethical in my practice and life. I will carry out actions to the best of my ability and knowledge every time. Patients trust in my care knowing that I will provide my all in every situation.

She was the nursing pioneer in cleanliness in preventing the spread of disease and contamination. She did not know about the specific diseases but understood the correlation between cleanliness and the environment and healing of patients. She provided statistical data to show how the death rate decreased after implementing health care reforms that emphasized sanitary conditions (Cherry and Jacob, 2011, p.10). In my practice we use statistical data that is similar in showing the use of hand washing in decreasing the risk of infection and the spread of disease. There are people employed thru the hospital which their only job is to observe staff members using hand hygiene and gather data for use in hospital research. This research is also educating staff and patients about the importance of a clean environment and patient
