The electronic medical record and the Affordable Care Act are just a few of the reasons that APN will need to act as active participates in making these changes. Patients can only benefit from a decrease in redundant care, coordination of a smooth transition of care environments and collaboration of an interdisciplinary approach to patient care delivery. Chard (2013) My vision includes many of the messages addressed in the three articles I critiqued, It is a working model of APN provided care that is supported by the governing health administration that employs the APN, a unified national nursing society and an educated patient population . This model involves a structured residency program for nursing students that is implemented in their junior year and incorporates mentoring by senior nurses and other disciplines who take an active role of support and basically living and mentoring by example.
This support would include a strong advocacy component that the APN would be required to maintain during their first two years of nursing employment with the hope that education and mentoring would foster a desire to continue their role after the program ended. A longer mentor program with support from mentors of all ages and disciplines would help the new APN to embrace interprofessional …show more content…
To encourage nurses to take an active role in advocacy and policy changes is critical as we move forward with the IOM recommendations. Students must feel comfortable with these key elements before they begin working in the health care field. By empowering new nurses maybe we can recruit more nurses and APN’s to stay in the nursing profession. My vision includes all the same elements that are included in the American Nursing Association (ANA) statement, , nurses as highly valued for specialized knowledge ,skills , and their caring to improve health status and providing safe and effective care to all patients
