Autocratic Leadership

Managers play a central role in effective team building. A new manager of the unit will be facing several challenges. Arguments and conflicts between members of the health care team, medication errors, lack of adherence to standards of practice and Code of Ethics, miscommunication between staff members and unpleasant atmosphere on the unit will influence negatively quality of patients care and may compromise safety of patients (Arnold & Boggs, 2011). Managers ' goal would be to get rid of these threats, unite the staff on the unit, increase motivation and create a better environment that would benefit everyone. It is demonstrated when a leader makes all decisions on its own without taking into consideration input of the staff (Moiden, 2002). Negative reinforcement often used to establish rules. Autocratic leadership style is all about control, organisation and discipline. Autocratic leaders typically make choices based on their own ideas and judgments and seldom accept advices from followers. Guiltinate, 2013 states that even though staff dislike autocratic leaders, they often work well under them. The managers who use this leadership style can create good structure and determine what needs to be done (Guiltinate, 2013). Staff who work under autocratic leaders usually heavily rely on them and may not know what to do in the leaders absence. Adopting autocratic leadership style for a long time may be more damaging than beneficial. However, the positive side of this style is that it works perfectly in emergencies and critical situations where there is a little or no time for discussions. When poor performance of the staff results in poor-quality patient care autocratic leadership may be used for a short periods of time. It is similar to transformational style of managing. Democratic leaders encourages open communication and staff participation in decisions. The interaction between staff and leader is open, friendly and trusting (Moiden, 2002). Staff and a leader work as a team. Democratic leaders try to develop the group sense of responsibility by encouraging people to share their ideas, and then combining all available information into the best possible decision. That allows followers to develop their own leadership skills, become independent and reduce leaders stress. (Guiltinate, 2013). However with all benefits to democratic leadership style Guiltinate, 2013 states that democratic leaders have less control on their team members as they provide guidance to their followers instead of issuing orders. At times of emergency situations when quick solutions necessary this leadership style may not be suitable. However, if the morale at the unit is low and communication between members is poor democratic leadership style may be of assistance on resolving these
