Social media portray women to look a certain way and to have a certain body type. Women are often appears as sex symbol and are usually degraded in advertisement products. In the film, “Miss Representation,” film producer, Jennifer Siebel Newson claims that women in today society are miss represented by social media because women are expected to live up to social media expectation such as women need to be beautiful, to be sexy, and to be skinny in order to be successful.
Women are constantly feed with the ideas from young girls to adulthood that they are at their best when they look good, which becomes the focal point for women to put beauty on the petal stall. Women are far from perfect, but because of social media advertising models that look flawless, women aim to perfect that look. According to Newsom, the ideal image of beauty is almost impossible to obtain because the perfection of these models are achieved through computerize cosmetic and editing. At a very young age, girls were encouraged to achieve these ideas of beauty, which they end up measuring themselves to the impossible beauty that is not realistic. Newsom uses statistic to show media gain revenue from advertising. For instance, U.S advertisers spent 235.6 billion in 2009. A system that will give women the voice to fight for fairness, and provide the women with support teams to proceed with the action toward better job condition as well as better pay. A method for women come together and supports one another especially in a society with male domination. Beattie’s article supports my thesis about social media expectation of women. The article discussed, as a union, women are not alone and can speak up for the rights of women in regard to social media portrayal of women. Women together can make awareness of social media negatives approach toward women.
