Using standardized nursing terminologies (SNTs) has numerous benefits. They include better communication among healthcare providers, increased visibility of nursing interventions and resultant patient outcomes, improved patient care, higher adherence to standards of care, and furthering the nursing research agenda by consistently generating data about patient care (Schwirian, 2013, para. 2). Through clinical judgment, research, and terminological research, nursing concepts can evolve. NANDA-I in its electronic form is easy to incorporate into the everyday workflow for …show more content…
This system was first published in 1992 and included 336 interventions and developed by nurse researchers at the University of Iowa (Adubi et al., 2017). It is exclusively geared towards nursing interventions and encompasses the proficiency of all nurses explicitly. Similar to NANDA-I, NIC is researched based and valuable for documentation, communication, integration of data across systems, productivity, competency, and reimbursement (Schwirian, 2013). Moreover, NIC has both physiological and the beneficial psychosocial components included in its structure. The NIC is updated frequently and given a unique numeric code involved in SNOMED (Systemized Nomenclature of Medicine). Each intervention listed has a label name, a definition, a set of activities to carry out the response, and background readings (The University of Iowa School of Nursing [TUISN], 2013, para. 2). Furthermore, NIC concentrates its interventions on individuals, families as a whole, and communities. Additionally, the focal point of NICs structure includes treatment, prevention, and health promotion. ANA recognizes NIC, and this standardized language has been adopted and utilized in many healthcare settings finding it beneficial to the standard of care. Moreover, health care agencies are using NIC for nursing treatments and are seeing the effectiveness beneficial. Similar to NANDA-I, NIC is useful across the
