Personal Narrative: My Recollection Of Mathematics

Improved Essays
Math has always been a favorite subject of mine and although I have never been the insightful mathematician, and I still struggle with abstract math problems, I always have a positive attitude toward the subject. Growing up in the elementary grades, I recall always getting good grades in math, but usually, those math problems only require the use of traditional problem solving methodologies. During that time, I loved solving math problems which involved only numbers, finishing a math problem before my classmates and also helping my fellow classmates. When I think about math in my early years, I realized how easy and uncomplicated the subject was. However, things became more challenging for me when I reached the higher elementary grades, high …show more content…
My first recollection of math takes me back to when I was about four years old. I was in basic school matching numerals with quantity, and counting blocks. We had the hundred, tens, and ones blocks which we used for counting, adding and quantifying. I was also doing basic computation with concrete objects. If I was adding apples, the teacher would provide real apples. During this stage of my life, I didn’t think math would get more complex than that. I don’t know if this math moment was evoked because there was food involved, or because the teacher made it hands on, but it was a moment in my life when everything was simple. I remember liking the hands-on way of learning. This I believe, started off my enjoyment of math at an early …show more content…
If there was a times I hated math, it was during this period of my life. I became disenchanted with the subject and even question the relevance of the amount of time spent learning it when my I know my career was not going to be in science nor engineering. I remember being in ninth grade and being absolutely lost in math class. I would get so depressed whenever I get math homework. I think this was the point in my life where I no longer cared for math. I remember the teacher coming to class and just start writing problems on the board with no explanation and told us to solve them. My ninth grade math teacher was a cold man. I distinctly remember the time I completely gave up on math. The teacher came to class and told us we were going to have a quiz. My fellow classmates and I agued that we cannot have a quiz because the topics he covered were not fully understood by most. He disregarded our plea for more explanation and practice on the topics and gave us a quiz anyway. When the grades came back from the quiz, more than 80% of the class got an F and I was among that 80%. I remember crying and staying after class asking him what I could do in order to get a better grade because under no circumstance I can tell my parents that I got an “F” in math class - my mother knew I was struggling with math, but she did not know the extent of my struggle.

There’s a Chinese Proverb that says, “Failure is not falling down, but refusing to get back up again.” I really wish I heard that quote when I thought I was a failure, but really was just being lazy. In Carol Dweck’s article “Brainology” a study is conducted on seventh grade students and their mindsets. Their mindsets were measured and studied for two years. Dweck studied the difference between the fixed mindset and the growth mindset students and how they did in school.…

Many people have different opinions about what they think about math. For instance, I looked up opinions people said about math and most of them were negative. One person stated: “I know a lot of people don’t like it. For me, I was good at the subject, but I didn’t really enjoy it.” In the story “Why is Math so important for kids to learn?” by Elise Wile, the author’s attitude toward Math is interested for these reasons: (1) she explains how it teaches logical and critical thinking, (2) she explains how it teaches life skills, and (3) she also explains how it supports continuing education and careers.…

Their decision caused me to fall behind and ultimately fail. I remember my teacher was in the middle of a lecture, and then an old lady would peak into the door and say “Ashley”? Getting out of my desk, she awaited for me smiling. She sat me down in a navy plastic chair in the hallway, taking a small yellow booklet out of her purse onto the table, sliding the booklet towards me to have me put down words in random sections, afterwards to have me read out loud to her. This would happen once a week.…

Math had always came easily to me. I was known as the math know-it-all because I would be finished with homework assignments before class was even over. Thus, in ninth grade, my Algebra I teacher told me that I should go into a honor level math class. My first honors level class was a breeze to me. We could hand in homework late, revise tests and quizzes, and had perfect notes given to us in class.…

My childhood memories regarding learning mathematics has been for the most part positive from 6th grade onwards. From 1st grade to 5th grade I was not conscientious so at times math tests produced anxiety but math was, at the same time, easier and simpler back then. I recall being the fastest person to state the multiplication tables in 4th grade. During 6th to 8th grade, although I was not necessarily the smartest, I landed at the top of the class in advance math since I was very hard working. However in 9th grade I recalled a horrific incident.…
