A Holiday Without Family

My family always had numerous different occasions in which when we gathered together to share memories and enjoy each other’s company. A holiday without family is not nearly as special as a holiday with our families. In my opinion, spending time with the older generation is a crucial element for our generation, the lessons are endless and it gives us a chance to see life in a different perspective and respect the simple things in life. My family and I get together for any and all occasions, my grandmother is the best cook I know and that only makes living next door to her and my grandpa that much better! We celebrate the obvious holidays such as: a white, snowy Christmas, our turkey filled Thanksgiving, a ball dropping New Years, fire work …show more content…
I love hearing all of the out-dated Christmas songs on the radio. Our family tradition is every Christmas Eve all of my cousins and aunts and uncle come over to my parent’s house to exchange the presents, and have a dinner filled with finger foods. Everyone of the adults usually brings separate foods, my Aunt Wanda usually brings a wonderfully baked 15 layered chocolate cake, this amongst my dad’s out of this world steaks perfectly seasoned and melt in your mouth tender, and my grandma’s divine, flavor filled honey baked ham, and I couldn’t ever forget my mom’s insane garlic cheese potatoes. We all gather around the table and as a family we all bow our heads and my Aunt Wanda says a prayer to bless the food and the people who prepared this wonderful meal. After the food is devoured, every one of us makes our way into the living room where my mother and my Aunt Wanda begin to disperse the presents amongst us. All of the gifts have been handed out, and the chaos begins, it seems almost like a race to see who can pile up the most wrapping paper at their feet. As the chaos comes to a halt, everyone thanks the family for all of their gifts and we all retire for the

The school had just gone off for winter break. I was excited to be free of homework for two weeks I thought to myself. As days past I would just relax by sleeping in more than I would usually and play video games with some friends and my cousins. Then Christmas came out of nowhere and I got to see relatives that I haven't seen for in years at my grandma's house that had been decorated with big old-fashioned Christmas lights.…

I interviewed my seventy-five year old grandpa Donnie, researched the Voyles lineage book that my grandma Arlene helped compile, and talked with my dad in order to find out more about my family’s history. According to Grandpa Donnie, it all began in 1759 when Jacob Voils, his wife, and his four sons landed in Port Charleston from Wales. Jacob was a poor man and could not afford the family’s way to Charleston. Desperate, he made a deal with the ship’s captain to indenture his oldest son William Voils as a crew hand for four years in exchange for the family’s way. Upon regaining his freedom, William furiously changed the spelling of his last name to Voyles to break all ties from his father Jacob.…

Tamales Through Time This year’s craziness and smells of carne and my family gathering in my grandparents’ kitchen brings a big, bubbly smile to my face, like always, because I know this means the official start of Christmas, and Christmas means I get to be with my family and Santa is going to bring me presents! My mom says that she heard that I’m on Santa’s nice list for the 5th year in a row! I always look forward to tamale making because I get to be around all my cousins and aunts and uncles and watch them make yummy food for our Christmas Eve feast while I make gingerbread houses! And every year when I ask if I can help this time, grandma always explains while grinning that “you can’t help with the tamales until you’re tall enough to reach the counter because someone so tiny will get knocked into the masa and then we will have tamales that taste like Alejandria!…

As soon as we walked through the door, the smells of fall surrounding us, preparations for that night’s dinner began. My mother and my Aunt Nicole headed off to get to work on making their pungent sweet-sour cabbage, while my great-grandma and I worked on making her world-famous apple pie from scratch. My Aunt Julie, the culinary expert, was in charge of preparing her savory turkey, giving the wishbone to my cousin and I to split. My youngest family members, Beau and Hadley, worked on making Thanksgiving crafts, like turkeys they traced with their hands, and Thanksgiving confetti, something I always did when I was younger. To add the final touch to our Thanksgiving dinner my uncle put in our favorite movie,…

On Thanksgiving, people have fun with their family and friends. It’s a day where they share a meal and drink alcohol together. However, in my family, we do not celebrate Thanksgiving because the holidays are different because of our culture. In my country, Dominican Republic celebrates Christmas Eve, which is the same as Thanksgiving, but the food is different compared to the food in America. Christmas Eve is still celebrated on December 24th; the food that the family makes is Pernil, rice, beans, and some wine.…
