As an aspiring physician, I will have to advocate for my patients with their family members, their employers, and even their health insurance companies. In order to do this I will need to believe in my patients and establish a relationship where there is mutual trust. I will have to trust that my patient will be honest with me and tell me the necessary information I need to communicate on their behalf. My patients will also need to trust that I have their best interest at heart, that I believe them, that I will help them, that I respect them and that I will not abandon them. I may have to dedicate much of my time to making phone calls, filling out forms, sending emails and speaking with various institutions on my patients’ behalf and maybe even on behalf of their family caregivers, so that they are able to receive the care and consideration they need in order to heal under my care. Advocating for another individual, can be risky, intimidating and discouraging, as there may be limitations to what I can do. However, a patient advocate is one of the roles I expect I will need to play as a practicing physician. I hold Duke University School of Medicine’s emphasis on the physicians duty to advocate for their patients, in high regard. I believe that undergoing training at the Duke University School of Medicine will prepare me to take on that role and give me the tools I need to improve patient
