My Girl: A Look in to the Beginnings of Womanhood
My Girl is a movie about a young girl named Veda who is beginning the transition from childhood to adolescence. In the movie, Veda experiences many common problems young girls face while transitioning into a woman. On top of the “normal” issues girls face, Veda is also a hypochondriac due to her living in a funeral parlor that her father owns. She is also a tomboy and doesn’t quite fit in with other girls at school. As the movie progresses, Veda goes through a series of events that most females can identify with. While most children and adolescents are not hypochondriacs, we can see how the things we are exposed to as children can manipulate our thinking. Veda was surrounded by death so she became obsessed with dying herself. When Shelly, her first female role model, first appears, Veda is unimpressed by her makeup and feminine clothing. The more time Veda spends around Shelly, the more she learns about becoming a woman and she begins to embrace it. Shelly also reaches out to Veda’s father and expresses the need for him to open up to Veda and explain things to her. At this point he explains to her the details of her mother’s death and lets Veda know he will always love her and her mother. This a turning point in the movie, even though she has just lost her best friend Thomas J, you see her begin to mature. The movie concludes with Veda reading a special poem she wrote for Thomas J about how much she misses him but she knows he will always be in her heart. Wearing a dress for the first time in the movie, as she leaves the writing class, she gets on a bike and rides off with her new female friend. As we watch them ride down the street, we now see Veda as a woman, not the young girl at the beginning of the
