Literacy development is a term used to refer to the process of learning how to write, read, and understand various types of text, symbols, and illustrations. It aims at equipping the learner with the ability to compose and comprehend text. In the current century, literacy development is shaped by various factors, for example, technology, contexts, and participants. Literacy is the center of learning of all subjects in school because all students must be able to read and make sense of the texts, symbols, and illustrations they come across. My parents created a conducive environment for me to start reading and writing, through which I developed effective listening skills. One of the major driving forces towards the process of my childhood literacy development is the availability of the reading area that my parents had set aside in the house. This part of the house motivated and made me place high value on reading. From this, I learnt that possessing the skills to read, write, and understand is very important in the society. As a non-native speaker of English, I struggled a lot in order to be able to listen, read, and effectively write in English language. I engaged in all class activities and assignments given by the course instructor to learn as much as possible. During my coursework, I had to read many books and printed articles to sharpen my reading skills. This method is very effective in the development of literacy skills because the more the learner is exposed to many reading materials, the more he or she is able to learn how to read (Stone, Silliman, Ehren, and Apel 78). Such a practice makes the learner to familiarize with new words, which are commonly used in English. This method helped me a lot in developing my reading
