As Mark Twain said, “The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who cannot read”. Many people today don’t take up reading or writing as a hobby. A lot of people would not even read a book for entertainment or to expand their knowledge and the most they write is a post on social media. In my opinion, most people know how to read but chose not to because they are uninterested or unwilling which causes them no to be as proficient in writing. I consider myself one of these people because I can remember loving to read and write but with time and the different obstacles I encountered, I have lost interest and do not do it unless it is needed. As I went into high school I was placed in an after school program for students with difficulty in reading or writing. At first, being placed in this program I felt unintelligent and excluded from the rest of my classmates. I saw it as a punishment that I didn’t deserve and didn’t want to participate much. With time and the advice of the teacher I realized that I did need help and was able to improve my writing skills enough to pass the program and be integrated with the rest of my classmates. After completing the program and as I ventured into college I learned that reading and writing are extremely important. In my opinion reading and writing is more than just finishing a book or composing an essay. To me it is the ability to critically think, listen, view different perspectives, and being able to adapt to the different surroundings and different situations. You can have all the right tools but the real test is when you put those skills to work and use them in the course of your life.
