Peg Tyre’s article helps express the evolution of teaching literacy with an emphasis on the recent change and experiment in the public school New Dorp located within Staten Island, New York. Tyre interviewed staff throughout different departments and the principal to understand where they started and where they were heading to in education. At New Dorp, Principal Deirdre DeAngelis attempted to improve the school’s test scores in multiple ways; firing bad staff, finding funding to break the school into smaller learning communities, and finding sponsors to help create after-school programs to aid in literacy. However, as nothing seemed to work, she turned to how the teachers incorporated writing into all of the classes throughout the day. The…

Each individual found their own reason why literacy is important. My input about literacy is that it 's an essential life skill because it can help you develop a more complex vocabulary, become more articulate in speaking and writing, and you’ll receive a lot of respect from people around you. Some struggles I faced with education growing up is the English language. I was proficient in mathematics, however, english was a challenge. Being raised in a bilingual home was one of the primary reasons why it was hard to separate the two languages I knew.…

Reading is the foundation of everything “Whether you want to be a reading teacher or not you’re going to be one” says Patty Wagenknecht. She was a language arts teacher for 30 years after that she was on the School Board for 12 years. Patty says she was all over the Pettis county school district, at one point she was in charge of going around making sure that all the teachers had everything they needed to teach appropriately. She would go every summer to find some sort of class or seminar to further her education and get up to date information. “You never really have a summer”…

I know that effective teachers understand literacy learning; they are aware of the complexity of a wide range of texts and the potential challenges these pose for students. They also recognize the sequence of events that occur within the classroom and how it could impact student learning. Most importantly, effective teachers know it is not how much students know, but rather, how they apply this knowledge. I also know that effective teachers know what their students need to learn. They do this to ensure that students are on track for college and career, effective teachers know what literacy skills and understandings their students…

There are a lot of people nowadays who don’t know how to read or write very well. The student proficiency rates that are achieved are very low. Therefore, that means that students should be taught at a higher literacy level so that the future generations know what it means to be literate and get through society. For example, If a person is illiterate then they will struggle in the future because being literate helps with getting jobs, and if that person doesn’t have a job then they will have no money, and if that person has no money they will not have food, water, or even a home to live in. How will that person be able to live?…

This experience has allowed me the opportunity to immerse myself into the role of a literacy coach. During this semester, I was able to experience many of the coaching roles. One goal that I will continue to work on is time management. Dealing with daily scheduling conflicts and the flexibility of the change of the school day schedule will be an inevitable struggle. One way I could achieve mastery of this goal would be to take on a full time coaching position rather than teaching and coaching.…

Literacy is how we read and write, thus it is extremely important to involve literacy when teaching various subjects. These subjects include physical education, science, mathematics, art, and etc. Without reading and writing, we would not be able to retain the majority of the information communicated. As Fisher and Ivey specified “your cognitive interaction with the information presented would be extremely limited” (7). This being said, we can imagine what it would be like to sit in a classroom, only observing and listening to what is being taught.…

This past summer, I volunteered for the Adams 12 Summer Literacy Intervention program that supports fifty kindergarten and first-grade students in need of extra literacy support. I helped lead three stations; computer games, student read aloud, and individual writing. Because I assisted with the smaller practice centers, the interventionists were able to dedicate their time and energy to helping each individual student overcome their individual challenges with specific techniques and strategies. However, the greater impact was helping the kids improve their literacy abilities. The impact of my involvement with this program was profound because early intervention is vital in supporting young struggling readers.…

In a nutshell, this course was eye-opening for me. My first placement was in physical education and at the start of this course I did not believe that much of it would apply to my first teachable. I knew that there were easy ways to work literacy into my health lessons, but I was unaware of the possibilities of working literacy into everyday lessons in the gym. The information I have gained from my peers and the instructor will be put somewhere I can easily gain access to when I begin my own teaching career. I can only hope this class was as useful to my peers as it was for me.…
