It has been found that 62% of students take part in multitasking with social media when in class, studying, and/or doing homework. This multitasking seems to create distractions which has shown to be a negative effect on academic performance (Jacobsen and Forste 2011).
“Media multitasking is broadly operationalized as the practice of concurrently interacting with multiple forms of media.” This takes place when students are texting, browsing the Web, watching a video online, all while speaking with friends in a simultaneous manner. Not only does this correlate with worsened academic performances, but it also is linked with higher rates of attention problems, anxiety, depression, aggression, behavior problems, and high-risk behaviors. What they did was they followed students throughout the semester up until midterms to follow their classroom habits; most used laptops or other technology.
