Mulesing is the act of cutting off extra skin around the bottom of a sheep. It is completed by many sheep farmers in Australia in order to lower the chance of their sheep getting fly struck. When a sheep gets fly struck it means that they have had flies lay eggs around their bottom because it was not clean. The maggots then hatch from the eggs and eat the sheep from inside to out.

One of the most obvious ways to lower the chance of sheep getting fly struck without mulesing is to breed sheep with less skin around their bottoms so that you don’t have to cut it off. Not only would this save all the farmers time, but it would also save them money because they would no longer have to pay people to help them with mulesing. Experts on the matter have stated that it is able to breed an almost flystrike resistant flock of sheep within two years. This means that within two years one farm could easily transform into a cheaper, more efficient farm with no animal cruelty anywhere. As well as breeding flystrike resistant sheep there are also chemicals that can be poured on to the sheep after shearing to lower chances of them getting flystrike. Shearing or crutching (shearing around the area of the bottom) sheep regularly and checking for signs of flystrike are also easy and humane ways to try and stop flystrike.
