Mixing alcohol with other substances such as energy drinks is never really a good idea, and pairing it with energy drinks may become very dangerous, especially for the young adults whom drink it more often.
A teenage girl at the aged 16, died after consuming three cans of pulse, which is a mix of vodka, soda and guarana, at a party in Cheltenham. An autopsy was conducted and it was found that the cause of death could not be determined. At a certain point, alcohol stops making a person intoxicated and doing liver damage and starts to do SERIOUS cellular damage to all parts of the body. For example, it's thought the caffeine in energy drinks can mask some of the effects of alcohol – so you may feel less relaxed or less sleepy after drinking. This can lead to increased feelings of confidence, more risk taking, and an increased likelihood of drinking too much.
In a recent National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC) survey, people said they believed energy drinks helped them party for a longer period of time. "It's one thing to drink [energy drinks] but when combining with others things they can cloud your judgment and make you do things you probably shouldn't," says Ms. Natasha Sindicich, coordinator of the ecstasy and related drugs reporting system at NDARC. It's also the 'shock, jolt, crash' effect that makes mixing energy drinks with other substances dangerous, Sindicich says.
The Australian and New Zealand Food Regulation Ministerial Council are currently considering the need for regulation of energy drinks. And so they should be.
However, the Australian Beverages Council – which represents drink makers – argues energy drinks in Australia are among the most regulated in the world. There are already warnings on the labels advising certain groups (children and pregnant women) against consuming the drinks, in addition to advice stating no more than two cans a day should be drunk, the council says.
