Number The Stars Book Reflection

Throughout the year, 4th grade completes a few novel studies as a class. After observing and planning a novel study with my teacher for Because of Winn Dixie, I was able to plan one on my own. I developed a novel study unit for Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. I chose this book because of it’s difficulty level in order to challenge my students this late in the year. I also chose to use this book and create this unit to make connections to other standards and subject areas that the students are learning about this time of year.

Each week, my Cooperating teacher and I would co-plan for the upcoming week. We would use our three week standards calendar and assessment to plan for each week. We would decide what the students needed to work on more and review based on their assessments from the previous week. We would follow our three week standards calendar to help us decide what to focus on based on the

As a result, my students had little to no background knowledge in these subject areas. Due to this, I had to break down a lot of concepts and use many different demonstrations when teaching these subjects. I used many examples and demonstrations to help explain the concepts to my students because so many of them were visual learners. During these demonstrations, I would encourage a deeper level of thinking through discussion and experimentation.

I used many different strategies to get my students involved in my lessons to deepen their understanding. I often used hands on activities and demonstrations so that my students could physically see concepts that were difficult to understand. I used engaging activities to keep my students involved and eager to know more about the concepts we were focusing on. My students were able to easily remember the fun, engaging activities they were able to do and the concepts during these lessons because of their involvement in

The video “Organize Your Thinking to Critically Analyze Text” (Brouhard, 2012) showcases an instructional strategy called “Keep it or Junk it” in which students read a short passage and select key vocabulary words from their reading to identify the main idea. After this is done, the students are eventually asked to write research essays on the content matter. There are multiple stages to the strategy, and the teacher does implement alternative techniques when she sees students who appear not to comprehend the task and cannot properly fulfill the objective. The students in the video are also shown using various terms from academic language in their classroom responses. The terms are all related to the subject or content matter, such as the “focus question” that they are required to answer or the “colonists” and “Powhatan” who were the focus of the readings.…

Book Overview I read the book Teach Like a Pirate by Dave Burgess (2012). This book is not a step-by-step manual that makes us better educators, it simply talks about how we as educators can use creativity and motivation to enhance student engagement, as well as, boost passion and energy within ourselves to create an environment that is warm, inviting, and empowering. The author divides the book into three parts: Part 1, the word “PIRATE” is broken down into six chapters.…

A crucial component when leading engaging activities is my approach to learning. I consider myself to be optimistic about learning, and set that example to the children when introducing a new lesson. When inviting the children to participate I want to remain on task and enthusiastic. A child can learn to model this approach to learning as well. This type of positive modeling can also impact the families of the children as well.…

During our 2 weeks of teaching our lessons I was able to observe 7 different activities and games. Some of the activities that I was able to experience and observe were practicing balance, baseball or striking skills, badminton, volleyball, tennis, soccer, and dancing. All the activities were different, although some of the activities were similar on the skills we are practicing or learning, but all were unique in their own way. Starting with the balance activity with Jaelyn and Allie the overall activity was very interesting. I never had the chance to experience or participate in a strict balance activity, meaning I never done an activity that focused mainly on my balancing skills.…

Rationale: Going through elementary school I remember doing the 5E model during science. My teacher had all the students engaged during science and I was eager to learn more. Now that I am learning about the 5E inquiry model it makes me realize that students need to be engaged in their learning. I chose this question because I have done some previous lesson plans using the 5E model. I like to teach students by getting them active and having them do a lot of the work instead of listening to me talk the whole time.…

Once the students went off to their first set of specials we knew how we wanted the rest of the day to go. We made sure for classroom management that when one of us was discussing the lesson, the other would be walking around, focusing students on the speaker, and answering any questions a student may have. Also, during the activities, we decided to go through them together. One of us would have hand out the papers, while the other gave the instructions. We would help out around the room and keep the students on task.…

Lesson planning is a highly important part of teaching. Lesson plans are a teacher’s guide in his or her class room. They outline the learning goals and objectives for a particular lesson or chapter; they may also include the activity the teacher has planned and the supplies they will need to help the students complete that assignment. During my field placement I have yet to see my cooperating teacher plan out her lessons for the week, but it is clear she has a lesson plan. She usually has a lecture planned out for each day and she uses the textbook to outline the students learning objectives.…
