Mission Trip Research Paper

Have you ever heard of a tap tap? Three summers ago, I discovered a tap tap not just a nickname for banging a pencil on a deck, but a kind of taxi in Haiti. They are called tap taps because the passengers will signal the driver to stop or go by simply tapping on the back of the truck. I learned this fact on a mission trip to Haiti three summers ago. The trip was a very eye opening experience where I learned that I have many things to be thankful for. This past summer, I decided to go on another mission trip to Guatemala. It was also eye opening, but in different ways. I learned that everyone matters in a team, and everyone is an asset to helping the team grow. The mission trips were very different experiences in many other characteristics, …show more content…
The house we stayed at in Haiti was also a home to a group of younger Haitians. Through the course of the week, we grew lasting friendships with them. The Haitians would ask for help with English words and grammar, while also helping to teach the team some Creole words. The team would play a game with them that was like a Haitian version of corn hole. The players would try and throw a rock into a cinderblock, and the last person to get their rock in the hole would have to drink a glass of water as fast as they could. The Haitians would tell stories of growing up in Haiti, and what they wanted to do when they grew up. The team would share stories of home, and the Haitians would tell us of how they dreamed of visiting America. In Guatemala, the relationships formed between the locals was not as strong as the bonds the team formed. The team had to learn to work together and communicate in order to build the house safely and efficiently. The team learned how to communicate with each other, through this building friendships. On the last day of the build, the team was not just a group of individuals anymore, but had grown to be one team. Even though the relationships built on the trips were between different groups of people, the bonds formed were just as

To start with I learned that a bateye is a rural segregated community built by the government in areas where sugar cane is grown that house Haitians that migrated there to work as sugar cane cutters. Some of the families have been there for two or three generations. However, they are not recognized by the government so they cannot receive paperwork required for healthcare. I also learned the phrase for duck-duck-goose is Spanish is “panto panto ganso.” Moreover, I learned that January 6th, a special day in my family was El Dia de Los Tres Reyes Magos (Three Kings’ Day) which is the day that children receive gifts instead of December 25th.…

I find the tenacity of the people I met in Tegucigalpa, Honduras to be particularly inspiring. I traveled to Honduras the summer prior to my ninth grade year with some members of my church and my family. I had virtually no idea what to expect. When we landed, I was shocked at how modern everything seemed. It’s hard to visualize countries like Honduras as being modern, but at first look Tegucigalpa certainly appeared to be ̶ our very first stop was actually a Kentucky Fried Chicken of all places.…

Growing up in a town of about 5,000 people cultural differences were few and far between. Everyone in my town was pretty similar; white, catholic, and family oriented. Many days I wondered how I could expand my knowledge of other cultures. Then, my junior year of high school, the opportunity to attend a mission trip through my parish came about. Catholic Heart Workcamp, often referred to as CHWC, was the name of the program.…

I never knew a little girl from Guatemala could have such an impact on my life. We did not speak the same language, and it took two translators to find out her name: Lady Maria. While on a mission trip in this country, 9 people from my youth group traveled to Panimache, a village two hours deep in the mountains. I noticed her even before exiting the van, and instantly knew I would spend the day with her. I connect well with children, but she was different.…

My first mission trip was for an organization called 1Nation1Day through my church, Milestone, back home in 2013. The goal was to save the nation of Honduras in one day and continue to pour out love and support to the Hondurans so that they may be disciples for a lifetime. To prepare for the mission we spent the majority of the year 2012 fundraising to provide clothes, shoes, and meals for the Hondurans and were grateful enough to raise $250,000.00. Applications for the mission trip were sent out and anyone could go as long as they could pay for the trip, which cost $3275.00. While fundraising for Honduras I was also working at Subway as well as fundraising for my self through care packages that would be sent to the people of Honduras.…

Through my involvement at the UCSD Student-Run Free Clinic and at FSA Community Program I learned to work in a team and to always share the same goal as my teammates. This common goal is to give the best and most accurate service to the patient at the clinic, the same goal was shared during my time at FSA. These teamwork experiences have also taught me to provide, accept and use feedback from the members of my group, and to always adapt, improve and develop new skills. Through these three activities, I was able to reinforce my reliability and resilience. By volunteering at a hospital and clinic, I was able to meet different types of patients with very different backgrounds and cultures, which allowed me to reinforce my cultural competence,…

The summer after my sophomore year, I went on a mission trip to Haiti with my church’s youth group. There, I served by building a house for a family affected by the earthquake that shook Haiti in 2010 and did minor repairs and clean up at the mission base I stayed at. At the end of each day, my team and I would come back to the base to discover it flooded with children. The kids would cling to your side and beg for you to play with them in the limited English they spoke. From the moment after I ate dinner to the time I went to bed, I played with the Haitian children- chasing them around the little yard, teaching them hand clapping games, and carrying them on my back.…

The purpose of a mission trip is not to save everyone or solve hunger. Many people who take mission trip have this mentality, and I 'm not going to lie, my first mission trip this is what I expected. I believed that I was going to be the one person to go down and “change” the people. This idea is far from reality, but I realize that you can make a difference in some people’s lives. I have taken a few mission trips to the Dominican Republic, where I have built relationships with the people down there.…
