Haiti Earthquake Narrative

The summer after my sophomore year, I went on a mission trip to Haiti with my church’s youth group. There, I served by building a house for a family affected by the earthquake that shook Haiti in 2010 and did minor repairs and clean up at the mission base I stayed at. At the end of each day, my team and I would come back to the base to discover it flooded with children. The kids would cling to your side and beg for you to play with them in the limited English they spoke. From the moment after I ate dinner to the time I went to bed, I played with the Haitian children- chasing them around the little yard, teaching them hand clapping games, and carrying them on my back. Throughout my life, I have desired to serve others in any way I can. Sometimes

Have you ever loved someone so much, you’d give an arm for them? Not the expression, no literally give an arm for? Growing up in Haiti with my brother, I remember teasing and pushing him around, because thats what big brothers are supposed to do. One of the things I remember most vividly about him was waking up every morning to play soccer with a tennis ball we found, and racing each other all through town with our hands behind our backs pretending we were cars. Everyday wasn’t always perfect, like those days we spent chasing each other because we fought, just like all siblings, and I didn't always appreciate having a younger brother.…

“At 4:53 p.m. on Tuesday, January 12, 2010, Haiti plunged into horror” (Lahens, 2010, p. 9). The earthquake affected three and a half million individuals, left two hundred and twenty thousand people dead, and destroyed four thousand schools (DEC, 2015). Understanding both the gravity of and the world’s response to the 2010 earthquake is essential in understanding the destructive relationship that has existed between Protestant medical missionaries and Vodun practitioners. Before exploring the historical and spiritual concepts of healing in Haiti, an overview of the current context of Haiti post-earthquake…

Shalece Glasgow I enjoy read your post when I read, it reminds me of Haiti. As a small Caribbean island, Haiti is often the victim of severe disasters such as a hurricane, tropical storms, and earthquakes, which have a tremendous impact on Haiti’s the environment and citizens in Haiti. Flooding usually occurs in Haiti’s most populous cities, which are in valleys along the coast. The most recent hurricane Mathew 2016 which some of my family were a victim. The Rev. Pat Robertson made a very unfortunate pronouncement about the Haiti tragedy on this last Tuesday night. Here is what I think about: I am thankful God does not:1- Judge us as a human would do.2- Save us as a bulk processing3- Change his love towards us4- Delay His promise Despite what “Times magazine” web page says about his self-promotion on the prediction of events, I would like to say that many people, including himself, forgets about the moment we live in history. The measure of our expectation about something to happen is directly proportional to the amount of its importance for us plus how much information we have or want to know about it. It's necessary to be dreaming and waiting for it in order to see the signs of its coming. As the same way, the wise men could not be deceived by that stars because they had…

Disaster capitalism, as coined by Naomi Klein in her book The Shock Doctrine, is the exploitation of a community suffering from a state of shock as a result of a natural, political, or biological disaster in order to make a monetary profit. The collective people sharing in this catastrophe are in a state of shock rendering them into a position of heightened vulnerability. This heightened vulnerability opened the door for major worldwide corporations to come in under the guise of providing aid and support and leave without delivering on their promise millions of dollars richer at the expense of the poor and displaced. The devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake of 2010 in Haiti is an excellent example of disaster capitalism at its finest.…
