Personal Narrative: My Experience With Catholic Heart Workcamp

Growing up in a town of about 5,000 people cultural differences were few and far between. Everyone in my town was pretty similar; white, catholic, and family oriented. Many days I wondered how I could expand my knowledge of other cultures. Then, my junior year of high school, the opportunity to attend a mission trip through my parish came about. Catholic Heart Workcamp, often referred to as CHWC, was the name of the program. This program stations in different states each year, focusing generally on cities in desperate need of service. It brings teens from all over the United States together for one week to do service and grow closer to God as well as each other. Throughout my experience with Catholic Heart Workcamp, I accomplished both of those things.
Many of my friends had gone on these trips in previous year and always talked about how enjoyable they were. They talked about how they met people from other states who they still keep in contact with and about all the fun activities put on by CHWC. I knew immediately this was something I would enjoy, so I signed up. A few weeks later at an informational meeting

After the Catholic Heart Workcamp staff finished with their business, the director of mission and ministry at St. Labre Indian School took the stage. She talked about the history of St. Labre, their mission, and things that have changed since the school has opened. She then informed us that we would want to give our best effort to not offend the Northern Cheyenne culture and we should recognize that many aspects of their culture were different than ours. The day was already coming to a close when the welcoming ceremony was finished so, we all went back to our rooms to rest up because we knew the next few days would be

The site that I visited was Mercy Hill Church in Greensboro, NC. I went to a sermon, with some friends, that took place on a Sunday night. When we arrived at the church, we stayed together and observed the site. The members of this church all seemed to be within their twenties and thirties; there were a few younger children and a few older women and men, but not many. Most of these people seemed to be from Christian ethnic backgrounds or just unaffiliated with any ethnicity.…

It was the first day of our medical mission trip. The 13 of us were divided into four group: triage, clinic, pharmacy, and faith. Colin, Laure, and I sat in plastic white lawn chairs, facing the locals who sat on three wooden benches. We had prepared a short, spiritual lesson to bring Jesus’ love to the rural cities of the Dominican Republic. When I welcomed them in their native language, their faces softened.…

The day I came to Job Corps, I remember leaving my house while my whole family was crying because I was leaving. The reason why they were crying is because I had never gone away from home before. Even though they were sad, at the same time they were happy because I was moving on with my life to better myself. It was hard for my dad to let me go because I am the oldest daughter and I have never separated from my dad. My little sister and my brother were crying too.…

Most of my development can be traced back to my Vietnamese Catholic youth group that I have been a part of for pretty much my entire life. Through weekly activities, helping with local events and organizations, hosting plays, and service for our church, I find myself to be much of an influential than a participant. Our time is spent interpreting pieces from the bible and how we can connect those pieces to our daily lives. Being part of this learning allowed me to improve my faith significantly. The community helped me become more than just typical generous person, someone who is willing of sacrifice his time for others, someone who worries for others when they are not feeling well, someone who desperately wants to make a positive impact.…

I was able to demonstrate Service by supporting the adoption of the dogs that currently had no…

Mutualism is also a value, attitude and behavior cultivated within the Native American culture. Mutualism evokes a sense of belonging and solidarity with group members that support the development of consensus and relationship building. In education there is a tendency to stress completion and work for personal gain over cooperation. Grades, achievement scores and honors are perfect examples of this mindset in education. When working with Native American students educators need to modify their mindset.…

Standing under the familiar radiant heat, the gentle glow on my skin reminded me of the many summers I spent being complacent in Washington. However, surrounding me were kids from numerous families who knew nothing about complacency. They were always moving, always multitasking, and always working; I wondered how migrant farm worker families coped with such a restless lifestyle compared to mine. For the past four summers, I traveled with the St. Anthony Parish youth group on mission trips. Most recently, I spent the last two summers in Bellingham serving the migrant farm worker communities through the Agape Mission program.…

Cross-Cultural Servanthood by Duane Elmer has changed the way I view missions. From contextualization in a new culture, to resolving conflict in my own, this book has given me a new perspective on life in general. There are so many different aspects of Elmer’s book that positively affect me, however there is not enough room in a five-page paper for all of them. Thus, I have chosen a select few to feature here. Together, they create quite an interesting range of topics, however they are all tied to one common goal: promoting the Kingdom of God.…
