SEA was introduced in the year 2011 to replace the Common Entrance exam. At that time once a child failed to meet the exam requirements their hopes of furthering their education was diminished at age twelve. Unlike children of today’s generation they are granted the opportunity until age fifteen to write the secondary entrance assessment and still pass for a reputable secondary school. Avril believes that “Now poor children can and do make it into better schools even though the process is plagued with corruption and nepotism”. Therefore, John and Matthew’s formal schooling came to a halt: her father was very disappointed in them and pressured them into becoming a farmer like himself but their mother did not lose faith in her sons and sent them to a nearby garage to learn the trade of welding. Avril sees herself in ten years retired and travelling to exotic Caribbean counties with her nieces. The reason I have chosen Miss Avril Sinanan to be my case of study is because I have known her for the past seventeen years as she is an associate of my mother’s and she has had the biggest impact on my educational perspective and I truly admire all the obstacles in her life that she has overcome.
