Celia Cruz was born on October 21, 1925, in Havana, Cuba. Singing in her free time, she gained major popularity, and essentially it was how she became famous. Celia, a Cuban American, was most known as the “Queen of Salsa”. Shortly after Fidel Castro rose to power her family relocated to the United States, which is where Celia recorded 23 gold records. She sang only in her native language, Spanish. Today, Celia is still recognized through many different organizations and programs. Celia grew up in an extended family of 14. They lived in a poor Havana village, Santos Suárez. When Celia graduated from high school, she intended on becoming a literature teacher, so she attended the Normal School for Teachers in Havana. Luckily she was able to launch a solo singing career with Tito Puente. Celia became the dynamic focus for the music group. She continued performing live through the 1970s and 1980s. Celia had major success once she moved to the United States, “In that time, she made more than 75 records, including 23 that went gold, and won several Grammys and Latin Grammys. She also appeared in several movies, earned a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame, and was awarded the American National Medal of the Arts by the National Endowment of the Arts.” (Celia Cruz Biography, 7). On July 16, 2003 Celia died at age 77, in New Jersey. She may not be here, but her legacy still lives on. On October 13, 2015, Celia, a drama series inspired by her life, debuted on Telemundo. Celia also has three different organizations. She has the Celia Cruz Foundation, the Celia Cruz Legacy Project, and the Celia Cruz All Stars; all in which keep her songs alive.
