Miep Gies Thesis

If there were a family in need of a place to stay and be hidden for a while, would you help? If it were a life or death situation, would you? Miep Gies was an office assistant to Otto Frank, Anne Frank’s father. Gies was a rescuer for the Franks during the Holocaust as she kept them hidden. Miep Gies was a trustworthy friend and co-worker to Otto Frank and risked her life to help hide him and his family. After two long years of secrecy, someone betrayed Gies, and on August 4, 1944, the doors to the stock room were raided by Nazi Police. It was Miep and her co-workers who “…were able to keep the family hidden for over two years, but eventually they were betrayed” (Miep Gies). During the time the Franks were away, the business still went on. They had to make a living some way. After a year of waiting and worrying “…Otto Frank returned. When they learned that the rest of the family had perished in the camps, she gave him the diaries” (Miep Gies). This is just another example that portrays how compassionate Gies was. She held onto those diaries in hopes of them all returning one day. Gies had been persuaded to tell her story and “had to think of the place that Anne Frank holds in history and what her story has come to mean for the many millions of people who have been touched by it. I’m told that every night when the sun goes down, somewhere in the world the curtain is going up on the stage, a play made from Anne’s diary” (Miep Gies: I Am Not a Hero). This magnifies how strong and brave she was to be able to tell this story of hers.
