Within the Clinical psychology field, there are a variety of subcategories and specializations one can work in. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) defines typical work of a Clinical Psychologist as to “assess, diagnose, and treat mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders.” (Bureau of Labor Statistics, n.d., tab 2) In general, clinical psychologists use their knowledge of these disorders to help individuals cope with stressors and to modify ways of thinking or behaviors that may be maladaptive. The APA further elaborates that often times, clinical psychologists may focus on specific populations to work with, such as “youth, families, couples, racial and ethnic groups, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals, and older people.” (American Psychological Association, n.d., para 5) These types of psychologists can work in places such as “hospitals, schools, courts, the government, [and] the military.” (American Psychological Association, n.d., para 6) Furthermore, ONET Online describes this field’s tasks, ranging from use of various treatment methods of therapy, such as psychotherapy to play therapy, to writing reports on clients and maintaining client records. (O*NET; n.d., sect. 2) Specific jobs include, but are not limited to, Child Psychologist, Clinical Therapist, Forensic Psychologist, and Clinical Director. (O*NET; n.d., sect. 1)
