Melatonin is a natural hormone made by your body's pineal gland; this gland is located just above the middle of the brain. During the day the pineal is inactive, when the sun goes down and darkness occurs, the pineal is "turned on" and begins to produce melatonin which is released into the blood around 9 pm and stay elevated for about 12 hours, its main job is to regulate sleep-wake cycles, darkness causes the body to produce more melatonin which signals the body to prepare for sleep, light decreases melatonin production and signals the body to prepare for being awake.
