Improved Essays
Masaccio’s painting, The Expulsion from Paradise, is well known by many artists as well as many people especially religions such as Christianity, the Jewish, and Muslim. Masaccio’s painting is well known because it deals with religion and what happened to Adam and Eve in the first chapter of the Bible, Genesis 1:28. When I look at The Expulsion from Paradise, it demonstrates that the author used Christianity, representational art, warm colors, and lastly I see that he used value to make his painting. Throughout this paper I will discuss why I found these words to describe the artists painting. First of all, the reason I chose this painting is because when I saw it fascinated me. Because it shows Christianity and being a Christian I understand

Fontana’s Christ with Symbols of the Passion can also be compared to Rosso Fiorentino’s Dead Christ with Angels. Both paintings came out of the Mannerist period during 1525 and 1600. Dead Christ with Angels is a prime example of this form of artistic expansion. Both artworks can be characterized by strong, unusual color combinations, crowded or ambiguous space, warm central lighting and elongated or often twisting figures. The comparison between the two artworks is almost identical.…

Nearing the end of his career in 2003, Bruce revisited collages from his earlier works and with the help of digital technology, he translated them into tapestries (Frieling and Garrels 12). One of these resulting pieces is Mary Anointing Jesus with the Precious Oils of Spikenard. The piece was first imagined in 1987 and then recreated with the assistance of Donald Farnsworth in 2003.…

Seven wedge-like shapes can be seen surrounding a portrait of Christ, who is displaying his wounds to the viewer, a ring of light encompasses around Christ and radiates out. Within the corners of the canvas are perfectly circular images depicting the “four last things”, Heaven, Hell, the Last Judgement and finally death. When viewed in its entirety the composition is revealed to be the eye of God; giving the viewer the impression that God is ever-watching. The wedge-like shapes demonstrate within them each sin; some which can be easily identified, the iconography being obvious and tame, another indication that this could potentially be an early work of Bosch, as it is a strong contrast to what has become synonymous with Bosch’s work who is widely credited with being the first surrealist with his depictions of bizarre creatures and strange…

Behind Adam and Eve on the left side of the painting coming out of what could possibly be the entrance to the Garden of Eden are lines aimed towards the backs of Adam and Eve. Perhaps Masaccio used these lines to represent God's voice, as he casts out Adam and Eve, without having to give God a human body but still exhibiting the power and anger that God is forcing upon Adam and Eve. The last main detail for this painting is the third figure in the painting that is right above Adam and Eve dressed in pink and floating atop a pink cloud; this figure Eden Cherubim placed by God to protect the tree of life with its sword of flames…

One of the long-standing questions about Christianity is “ What did Jesus look like? ”. This question has baffled many researchers, archeologists, and even Christians, for the Bible does not give an explicit description of Jesus. Many artists have painted pictures of the Messiah, but no one knows whose depiction of Christ is the correct one. In this paper, I will be analyzing three paintings that depict Jesus. The three paintings I will be analyzing are Head of Jesus by Warner Sallman, Jesus of the People by Janet McKenzie, and Reconstruction of the Face of Jesus, a scientific recreation of an Arabic man’s face who lived during the time of Jesus. As a basis of comparison, I will be using the Shroud of Turin.…

The Renaissance, which began in the 1300’s and lasted up until around the 1600’s, was a movement which sparked an enormous increase in artistic experimentation and emphasis on the human figure. During this time, many paintings contained Christian imagery and connotations, whether outright or implied. Two paintings during this time that illustrate several concepts and depictions are Sacred and Profane Love by Titian (or Tiziano in Italian) and Velazquez’s Venus with Her Mirror. These two paintings include imagery that is both secular and non-secular, but one leans more toward one side of the spectrum than the other. This paper will define some key terms used in the aforementioned paintings, analyze the secular and non-secular imagery of each…

The Crucified Christ (1503-04) is a classical example of Italian Renaissance art. The piece illustrates, extremely effectively the Italian desire to make everything in which they paint beautiful, not matter how horrific the subject may be. Christ in this depiction, although, dead does not appear to have progressed into rigor mortis of any degree, Christ also appears to look peace in death in the Raphael painting, unlike in the Grunewald where distress is on Christ’s face is blatant. The way in which Christ is bleeding in Raphael’s piece is depicted with a degree of beauty, the bleeding is not messy, any blood coming from Christ, is delicately dripping into chalices held by angels on either side of Christ. This is a complete contrast with that of Grunewald’s depiction of the crucifixion, where blood is freely flowing down both his arms and legs.…

Michelangelo was commissioned by a banker to carve a Bacchus for his garden. The artifact tells an interesting story, the reason Michelangelo did this was probably because it was necessary so that the Virgin could support her son on her lap. Creating art is, as some say, the indication of mystery in excellence or God; it is a diversion in which man lets off an overabundance of steam [stored energy]; otherwise it is the outflow of feelings by man’s psyche, and most of all; it is pleasure; however, considering everything, it is a method of social unity amongst mankind; consoling them in similar feelings and forever extending the shared common visual language of the world. Through new visual ideas introduced by artists, categories of styles are borrowed and begin to bleed through history and time. In my opinion, this is held to be evident in the art pieces of the mosaic of Theodora and her assistants located inside the Basilica of San Vitale on Ravenna Italy (527-565 Ca.) and the…
