During the middle ages, manuscripts or hand-made books, were used to educate the people about the principles of Christianity. It was a transition from the dark ages and a time when Christianity was expanding in Europe. Wealthy members in society wanted more churches, artworks, and manuscripts. Many of the works were religious, but also non religious. Manuscripts were an important artwork to expand Christianity. The Bestiary, the book of Beasts, is an encyclopedia that explains a variety of animals, plants and etc. It was mainly a source for knowledge and belief that animals have a similar life story compared to people. Some descriptions of the “beasts” are either true or false. They are mostly imaginary because they include animals like a unicorn and a phoenix. Each description is followed by a story that comes from traits of the beasts. It also explains the physical appearance and personality of each beasts. This makes the manuscript more interesting for viewers because it has an imaginary element. The book includes many beautifully hand drawn illustrations in many different styles made from different people. They contain many decorations and intricate illustrations known as illuminated manuscripts. This technique made manuscripts not only an educational tool, but also an artistic technique. The purpose of the book was to spread knowledge and awareness about Christianity through illustrations and decorations.
