When it comes to salary base pay, hourly base pay, merit increases and bonuses it have forever been a touchy subject. In some companies they have policies directing their employees to not discuss it at all. It is a completely uncomfortable situation to have this discussion with others. I have been in scenarios where I have stated both the correct and incorrect amount in which I am being paid on, I never know if I should go lower or higher in the fake amount being told or if I should state my real amount. No one wants to offend the other person or persons in the conversations and in most case no matter what direction the conversation goes someone will be offended. Whether one feels as if they are not making enough, the other person is being paid way too much for the output of work that they do, or someone feels bad for another who is getting the short end of the straw. In this case study, Mary Jones was hired right out of college after her graduation. At the time of her interview she accepted the company’s offer of $40,000. She had to be pleased with the amount offered as she accepted it. Throughout her year with the company she made major strides and made quite a name for herself building relationships with colleagues and superiors (Uhl-Bien, Schermerhorn, & Osborn, 2014, p. W-100). The case study mentioned instances where Mary went to work on the weekends to finish up some things or to make sure it was going accordingly, and other times she would finish up her work at home on her own computer (Uhl-Bien, Schermerhorn, & Osborn, 2014, p. W-105). That is her going the extra mile for the company’s benefit and these are prime examples of what organizational citizenship behaviors are.
