In the novel Twilight, the main characters are Bella Swan and Edward Cullen. Bella, a seventeen year old young lady who moved from Phoenix to Forks, Washington, purposely to live with her father who she has a distance relationship with. In the novel, we the reader was informed that her decision to live with her father was her own volunteering action which was made in order to allow her mother Renee to have a good vacation time with her new husband, Phil Dwyer; that is Bella’s stepfather. Arriving in Fork, Bella new fresh beginning started monotonous, although, that changed the moment she had a glimpse of Cullen family during her first day at her new school, Forks High School. Note that this event led to the main conflict in the novel Twilight. The principal conflict was introduced when Edward ceased a skidding vehicle from incapacitating Bella at the school parking lot. In literary terms, this is an external conflict, and the type is, person vs technology. Edward Cullen is a brave young man who stays true to his heart and wishes regardless what his own nature tempted him to do. Stephenie Meyer is the author of the novel Twilight, Meyer adequately used these literary techniques in her first series book, Twilight to aid readers to understand the world of Bella and Edward. Meyer used simile to describe Edward handsomeness and likewise Bella’s beauty. The use of foreshadowing by Meyer is mostly utilized when talking about werewolves. Another techniques that Meyer utilize was imagery, for an example, "Hey, what 's up with the apple?" Those words were spoken by Bella in chapter 10 when she couldn’t decide if it’s better to cave in to the temptation of pursuing Edward after she knows well of the danger that can come along. This quest is so important to Bella because being with Edward makes her feel happy and give her a better purpose to live. The author 's choice of vocabulary is impressive because there is no any significant alteration. Even Meyers sentences structure is well balanced, Meyers used long and short sentence structure. There are many tones in the novel, such as irony, serious, formal, informal, and solemn. Most of these tones do not present throughout the entire novel, on the contrary, the tones shifted in the course of the novel. During the course of the novel, one present theme is love, this theme is what emerge the main conflict in the novel, matter of fact, it is what end up saving Bella lives during her near death experience.
