A Thousand Splendid Suns takes its readers to Afghanistan when all the fighting was taking place. It tells the stories of two girls/ women, Mariam and Laila, which lived in the area during the time of some terrible events. The terrible events eventually brought the two together. It takes its readers through love, pain, sadness, loss, grief etc. Both had to live through the last thirty years of Afghanistan. They went through losing their parents, being in love, having to move, and more. Somehow, they still found the joys throughout their lives. Both females had many conflict that they had to overcome, more personal than national. Mariam grew up not really knowing her father. She only got to see him once a week. She was known as harami, which meant bastard child. At the age of 15, Mariam ran away causing her mother to commit suicide. Mariam had to live with the guilt her entire life. The conflicts that they have to live through throughout the book were not simple conflicts that just blew over. They had to live through the wars, deaths, lies, etc. Their lives are now based on that. Their destinies are set for the rest of their lives. For example, they encountered the conflict where Mariam murdered Rasheed. Because of her actions to end the conflict, she committed a crime and was sentenced to death. Her one action set her destiny. She knew at the exact moment, that it was the end for her. A Thousand Splendid Suns tells of conflicts that both females had to face and overcome. Personal and national conflicts were all over the place. Each girl had her own personal conflicts that they had to face, as well as sharing a few with each other.
