US Department of Education defines Magnet schools as public or charter schools that contain a specialized curriculum (2014). These curricula can vary from subjects such as science like the Bronx School of Science, or flight training at Rancho High School Academy of flight. Both programs qualify as magnet schools, however, the Bronx school is a magnet school within itself. Most programs exist within schools that provide a normal high school. These programs are more plentiful as they do not require the program to own their own facilities. Most individuals would reason that some sort of segregation would occur automatically. It is policy however, that the students of both sections of a school are encouraged to maintain a singular sense of purpose. These schools retain the same traditions of all high school, and examples of these would be sporting teams, student led councils and organizations, and overall school pride. It is also within the history of these schools that those that existed prior to the inclusion of the magnet program saw a major improvement of their facilities and instructors. Funding from these programs are funneled directly into the school and as these sources transitioned from federal to local it became a necessity to ensure cooperation of the school. Dr. Waldrip in his studies stated, these schools offer a 95% increase in completion rate (students enrolling as freshmen and graduating), than those labeled as public schools (2013). Lastly, it is paramount that students enrolled in these programs maintain as normal a high school experience as possible as those students are more likely to succeed in graduating and moving on to a 2 or 4-year
