Theodore R. Sizer's Reflection Of The Educational System

Education is fundamental for everyone. It has always played an important role in the human society . With this, learning can be engaged in various ways, leading people to have different opinions on how the educational system works. Written in 1984, Theodore R. Sizer’s essay "What High School Is" as part of his book "Horace 's Compromise: The Dilemma of the American High School, analyzes a high school student’s reflection and puts in his own past experience and knowledge to state his ideas of how the educational system should be enhanced. Theodore R. Sizer came from a heavily background in academics from being a headmaster at Phillips Academy in Massachusetts, part of the Education Board at Brown, and a dean at the Graduate School of Education at Harvard, and so understands the field superbly. Courses such a english, stoical studies, physical education, mathematics, and science have no “coherent relationship or sequence across subjects" (621). Knowing these subjects however allow the students to continue on to the next step of the subject, and eventually leading them to their future careers. The importance of education is undeniable for every single student and person. Each subject is needed to be used as a fundamental base for the real world as education itself is a component for the advancement of the human society. Sizer mentions that these courses do not have any relations with each other stating they are too broad. However for most high schools these days, they require the students to take the basic of each course in order to proceed to an advanced higher class such as one must knowing how to walk before they can run. Math for example is essential for classes such as chemistry and physics. English has been used to thoroughly explain and understand the concepts of the other
