There were many speculations on why the Fugate family was blue. Most involved with the possibility of a heart disease or lung disorder. One old timer proposed the idea of their blood being closer to the surface. It didn’t get much medical attention because so few doctors visited the remote region the Fugate’s lived in. This lead to most of the talk of it being rumors, and Ruth Pendergrass, a nurse in the area, tried desperately to get attention to this medical abnormality. Nothing really happened until these rumors fell onto the ears of a young hematologist named Madison Cawein. At the time he heard it, he was working at Kentucky’s Lexington medical clinic. By now, Cawein had already done some major works. He did some of the earlier works on L-dopa and was involved in isolating a cure for cholera. He headed for a clinic owned by the American Heart Association in a town called Hazard. This is the fateful place he met Ruth. Together they searched for blue people.
