The Color Purple Comparison

The Color Purple was originally a novel written by Alice Walker in 1982. It was later adapted into a movie and a musical. The movie was about a fourteen year old African American girl growing up in Georgia in the 1930s. Her name was Celie and she was poor and uneducated. She conceived two children with a man named Alphonso whom Celie believed was her father. Alphonso abducted the children and gave them away. Celie and her younger sister Nettie learned that a man named Mister wanted to marry Nettie. Alphonso refuses to let Nettie marry him but he allows him to marry Celie. She goes to live with mister and his children who treat her badly. Eventually Nettie runs away from Alphonso and goes to live with Celie and Mister.

Celie and Nettie had no choice but to do what they were told. They were both young and easy to coerce. They did not know what was happening to them or why it was happening. Celie adapted well to the way of life her husband wanted her to live. At first she could not cook, clean or do hair but Mister used physical abuse to “train” her. She followed all of his rules because she knew what would happen to her if she didn’t. One of his rules was that she was never allowed to touch the mailbox. She could not get mail out of the box for any reason. He even told her that he fixed the box and that he could tell if she touched it. Years later Shug Avery (Mister’s Mistress) came along and got the mail out of the box. There was a letter in there from Nettie. They read the letter and they knew it had to be more. When Mister left the house they searched and found years’ worth of letters hidden in the floor boards. I guess you can say that Shug coerced Celie into defying Mister. Celie’s family situation was dysfunctional and she was deprived of so many things. She finally found some peace when she left Mister and her sister and kids came back into her
