Celie and Nettie had no choice but to do what they were told. They were both young and easy to coerce. They did not know what was happening to them or why it was happening. Celie adapted well to the way of life her husband wanted her to live. At first she could not cook, clean or do hair but Mister used physical abuse to “train” her. She followed all of his rules because she knew what would happen to her if she didn’t. One of his rules was that she was never allowed to touch the mailbox. She could not get mail out of the box for any reason. He even told her that he fixed the box and that he could tell if she touched it. Years later Shug Avery (Mister’s Mistress) came along and got the mail out of the box. There was a letter in there from Nettie. They read the letter and they knew it had to be more. When Mister left the house they searched and found years’ worth of letters hidden in the floor boards. I guess you can say that Shug coerced Celie into defying Mister. Celie’s family situation was dysfunctional and she was deprived of so many things. She finally found some peace when she left Mister and her sister and kids came back into her
