What is important about what is not being said in the story? In other words ,what role does silence play in the story?
What is important that is not being said in this story is, the abortion. The author does not directly tell the reader the man and women is having a discussion about the women not wanting to go through with the abortion. The story does give a lot of hints for example "It’s an awfully simple operation, Jib"(Line 51) this is the hint the author Ernest Hemisway gives the readers. The story revolves around the idea of the abortion, this matter constantly through this whole short story, "They just let the air in and its perfectly natural" (Line 54). To answer this question I would say the girl. I came to this conclusion because in this story, the male figure seems as if he is the boss of the relationship. The male in the story has this power over the women, "I don’t know,’ the girl said. ‘Is it good with water?" (Line 29), that makes her act the way she does. Jib's character portrays a woman who decisions are made by a man, seeking approval before taking action, when the male says "Anis del Toro. It’s a drink." (Line 23) "Could we try it?" (Line 24). She also is encountered with a tough decision should she go through with this abortion to please the male, or should she not go through will the abortion disppotioning the male in the process. Reading "Hills Like White Elephants" I see that Jib is a very kind lady, "The girl smiled brightly at the woman, to thank her." (Line ). When the matter of the abortion was resurfaced, you can see, her character then begins become more stronger and confidant then she was in the beginning of the story. I believe that Jib, is use to the male making decisions for the both of them, so when she is faced with a situation that greatly affects her whole life, she then feels its time to put her foot down "I’ll scream,’ the girl said." (Line 114) The point a view of the situation is different with both parties. The male, feels that if the abortion does happen they will be "happy" "That’s the only thing that bothers us. It’s the only thing that’s made us unhappy" (Line 58), but Jib is afraid of the operation, she does not want to go through with the abortion. In conclusion, I believe Jib deservers more sympathy then the male because ultimately, this is Jibs decision. No matter how much the male wants the abortion to happen , if she said no the operation will not occur. How can you make a women chose between her, to be child or her love interest, this is a heartbreaking decision Jib must
