Her boyfriend also known as “the American” wants Jig to have an abortion and talks to her in a matter that he expects her to listen to all his commands, and doesn’t care about her feelings towards the situation which is her pregnancy. The American is very assertive about her taking on the procedure only because it inconveniences him. Jig is weak and it appears that she has let him make most of the decisions throughout their relationship. They both want their relationship to become as before but it’s a hard choice to give up a baby especially the mother. For example, although you can tell that the American wants Jig to have an abortion, the American never mentions the word “abortion”, implying that the have a hard time communicating. They simply hint what they want to say to each other rather than just state what they want. Also, you can tell that they argue a lot since in the beginning of the story they started arguing about minimal things such as when Jig said that the beer tasted like liquorice to then discussing whether or not she should go through with the operation. Their communication is terrible since the American is mostly the only one who is taking over the conversation and Jig is the one that is trying to say no to the operation but the American is there constantly trying to convince her to agree with it by making promises and eventually becomes a bit assertive at one
