Ai Identify four different reasons why people communicate. * People communicate to express their feelings and emotions. * Communication is a way to develop good relationships. * Individuals communicate with their support workers to tell them what they need support with and what they would like to achieve. * Communication is important in the work place between colleagues as this will ensure continuity with the service user, and to ensure support workers know the current needs of the service user.

* Speak with confidence, you do not want the individual to think you may be frightened or don’t know what you’re talking about. * Hand gestures be careful not talk with your hands as this may lead to confrontation as the individual might think you are being aggressive. * Body language the way you sit or stand, hold your head these can all be misread and the individual may get mixed messages * Facial expressions try not to frown, smile, show sadness/happiness, surprise, fear as facial expressions are very easy to read and could cause confliction.
Avi Explain why it is important to respond to an individual’s reactions during communication.
To show the individual you are listening. If the individual thinks you are not listening then they will lose interest in the conversation.
Avii Explain how an individual’s background can influence their communication methods.
If an individual has grown up in another part of the country they may not be able to understand someone’s accent. Same as if an individual has grown up in another country they may not be able to understand the language. Individuals from different cultures may have religious beliefs ie that women cannot speak to men outside of the family. If someone speaks very fast depending on how the individual’s background and how they communicate they might not be able to understand so they may need to slow down to be understood.
