Dear Dr. Edmondson,
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. My name is Wendy Klunk. I am in eighth grade at Norup International School in Oak Park, Michigan. In my technology class we have recently been studying digital divides. A digital divide is a split between those who have access to sufficient modern technology and those whose access is insufficient. At the state government level, I feel as though this issue is mainly focused on in terms of the city of Detroit and its public schools, yet this issue goes much beyond one city.

One area in our state where this topic is a big problem is your hometown, Ypsilanti, Michigan. The poverty rate of this city is 30%. This, in itself, is a huge problem. Every student deserves an equal education and the wealth of the area in which one lives should not matter. One proposed solution to the Ypsilanti-Ann Arbor digital divide is a program called Wireless Ypsi. Its goal is to provide all of Ypsilanti with free internet access to bridge the community’s digital divide. This program could potentially help the schools in getting more access for technology. The schools and community of Ypsilanti could attempt to pass a bill that would give the schools a small grant. With the money, each school could purchase inexpensive laptops that could travel on a cart from classroom to classroom -- a lab on wheels. This would be a viable solution because in partnership with Wireless Ypsi, the school would not have to pay for internet access and the only economic burden would be the purchase of the laptops. This plan would help improve the lives of all Ypsilanti

Due to the fact that I am currently done with my school year I sent a Google Form to the District Communications director of my district, Mallory Sribanditmongkol and asked for her assistance in answering some questions about her role and technology. Mallory is widely known around the district but her position is relatively new and, therefore, was of interest to me due to how little I really understood about what she does on a daily basis. Therefore, I started by asking what Mallory’s responsibilities are in her position as the district communications director. Mallory replied by listing a plethora of jobs including handling all media relations, the website, all social media outlets, and communicating “newsworthy events” to all members of…

As most would say “poverty is still a big issue that people at all ages are facing in America.” This is very true as to the whole country as well. So many people are living at or below the poverty level all around the world. Even though many families for the most part are wealthy enough to maintain a good, needed lifestyle, kids that are under the poverty level are not getting the health or education that they should because wages are too low for some to maintain a necessary lifestyle, as families do not have the money for it.…

We agreed that there could be a digital divide depending on socio-economic status of students or different schools being more technologically involved than others. Marginalization is therefore an issue when considering learning in the 21st century as there is no blanket rule across the board when considering adequate access to digital media. I have subsequently been exposed to the issues technology brings. I have also been exposed to articles that emphasise the great important of support to teachers who are transitioning to a more technologically involved learning space. They need the correct encouragement and support so that this transition can be effective.…
