Defining change and a digital workplace
Change is inevitable. Change is significantly apparent in ‘New learning’ or ‘21st learning’ as there is a substantial amount of research contributing to the idea of transforming learning environments, in turn, changing ‘classroom’ or ‘learning space’ dynamics. Change can be relative. Cuban (1993) explains that for some teachers substituting textbooks, deciding to implement technology such as computers or introducing small group activities into a class once a week is a sharp withdrawal from constant routine and thus considered a substantial change from their perspective. Through personal experience and careful research, I have coupled important aspects to define a digital workplace in the 21st century. A range of different settings (workplace and educational institutions) of a digital workplace means that the definition could slightly vary. Living during the 21st century means the workplace now isn’t as typical as a room filled with stationary and occupied by employees with strict office hours. There is now a distinct blur between a physical office and the type of work that is undertaken by employees who are showing an interest in new collaborative and effective ways. Flexibility is a word fit to assist in defining a workplace in the 21st century. Stone (2004) states that today employers appreciate and look for flexibility when considering long-term employment relationships. Flexibility is an astounding characteristic of a digital workplace in the 21st century as the essay will further show. Important characteristics of a digital workplace also include the use of technological devices or tools. We agreed that there could be a digital divide depending on socio-economic status of students or different schools being more technologically involved than others. Marginalization is therefore an issue when considering learning in the 21st century as there is no blanket rule across the board when considering adequate access to digital media. I have subsequently been exposed to the issues technology brings. I have also been exposed to articles that emphasise the great important of support to teachers who are transitioning to a more technologically involved learning space. They need the correct encouragement and support so that this transition can be effective. It could be a little overwhelming for pre-service teachers to achieve. I do believe that it is a career long process where educators need to be continuously proactive in both professional learning and
