According to Kumar, Adhish, and Deoki (2014, p. 82), leadership is defined “as an ability to influence a group toward the achievement of goals”. Also, it has been argued that leadership is a trainable and transferable skills, rather than being an exclusively in born ability (Kumar et al., 2014). This invariably means that if anyone has the desire and the will power, such person can become an effective leader. Apart from this, Taylor (2009) sees “leadership in terms of unifying people around values and then constructing the social world for others around those values and helping people to get through change”. As indicated by Taylor (2009), key leadership elements include vision and strategic thinking, external awareness, influence, motivation, confidence, trust, political skill, review, and teamwork.
In the United States, the healthcare system is massive and fragmented, therefore, the system requires quality leaders at every sector in order to have positive outcomes. There are many leadership theories in the literature such as great man theories, trait theories, situational-contingency theories, transactional theories, and transformational theories (Taylor, 2009). My leadership skills would be strengthened by motivating people to be productive. I find transformational leadership theory to be a perfect fit into my goal of becoming a leader who influences patients to choose healthy behaviors that will promote quality of life.
