Today’s leaders are faced with many challenges. In an ever-increasing global and interconnected society, it is important for modern leaders to be able to connect with and lead a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds. Leaders must be savvy in the way they interact with employees and stakeholders, but must also consider ways to build a multi-cultural workforce. Spiritual leaders seek to engage the human spirit-mind, body and soul (Benefiel, as cited in Redden, 2010). It is then perhaps only natural for leaders who focus on fulfilling individuals in all capacities to also make it a priority to accept and embrace a diverse and dynamic workplace.

However, in order to ensure a programs’ success, leaders should be cognizant of several key factors. Effective, modern leaders must recognize that “diversity” extends beyond race, gender, age and ethnicity. It now includes factors such as lifestyle choices (Luttrell, 2014). Programs that address various family and home issues, such as alternate work schedules, options to work from home and child and elder care options should be part of any modern diversity initiative (Luttrell, 2014). Being willing to accommodate religious or cultural holidays and specific cultural apparel will also go a long way in demonstrating commitment and value to diversity (Wall Street Journal, …show more content…
Placing minorities in leadership positions can make a big impact and “leverage their cultural uniqueness for the benefit of their work teams and employers (Ingram, 2015). Minorities in leadership positions can also build understanding between different cultures and server as an example to lower-level employees that there are career advancement opportunities available within the organization (Ingram, 2015). One of the most important roles of a leader is to build relationships in an effort to cultivate talent management and recruitment connections at corporate, regional and business levels (Fineman & MacGillivary, 2011). Furthermore, local and regional leaders should be involved in determining the company’s overall vision for diversity and inclusion.
