When there are students who display various types of disabilities in my class I usually treat them as I would treat any other classmate. I try not to display any forms of special treatment. In my junior and senior year in high school I was a part of the best buddies club. The club allowed students to interact and get to know other students that have disabilities. In the club a student would become “buddies” with a student that display various types of disabilities. It created a safe and normal environment where two students were getting to know each other. Through that experience I learned a lot, but I think one key thing I took from this experience is how important it is to not treat them differently. A lot of the times people treat them differently thinking that they are being helpful which can actually be a constant reminder of their disability. What are the advantages and disadvantages of “labeling” or categorizing individuals with disabilities?
I think the advantages of being labeled or categorized with a disability is that the person would get the right benefits. There are rules and regulations that are set to help and accommodate people with disabilities. For example, if a child with a learning disability is not labeled or categorized he/she can be misunderstood and taken for being a troublemaker. In result, the child will never get the help they need.
The disadvantages of “labeling” or categorizing with disabilities is that people would treat you differently. Sometimes when people find out a person is categorizing with disability they might use that against the person, which can open the door to bullying.
