Major Firms Competing in This Industry As indicated by the 2016 Global Powers of Retailing report, which is announced each year by Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu and STORES magazine, for the first time in a decade, the top three biggest retail companies in the world are all United States retail companies, demonstrating the dominance of United States based retail chains both at home and overseas. Walmart, Costco and Kroger take the number one, number two, and number three spots. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is the world’s biggest physical retailer by a significant margin. For its 2015 fiscal year, the company reported revenue of $485.7 billion, an overall year increase of about 2% (Wal-Mart Annual Report). Next is Costco Warehouse Corporation, who has held its ranking behind Wal-Mart Stores Inc. as the second largest retail company in the world. The company is an enrollment only retail chain with more than 81 million cardholders worldwide. Costco’s revenue was $113.7 billion for the 2015 fiscal year and more than $2.4 billion in revenue is credited to yearly customer enrollment fees (Costco Warehouse Annual Report). At the end of December 2015, Costco had a market capitalization of $73.6 billion (Market Watch). Lastly, there is Kroger Company. Kroger Company moved from number six to number three, giving the United States retail companies the top three rankings for the world’s largest retail chains. It is also the largest grocery retailer in the United States. Market Watch, which provides the latest stock market, financial and business news reported Kroger’s total sales to be $108.47 billion for fiscal year 2015, an increase of 10.2% over the prior year.
