To begin to understand how one is motivated to maintain their physical health, keep a healthy nutritional diet, or to keep exercising, one must know what motivation is. While it is difficult to define, a simple explanation can be presented. The study of motivation concerns those internal processes that give behavior its energy, direction, and persistence. Within energy, direction, and persistence, behavior gains strength, purpose, and endurance. To maintain physical health, nutrition, and exercise energy/strength, direction/purpose, and persistence/endurance are all needed. One key way to keep motivation in these situations is by setting goals. The effect of goal setting in relation to motivation will be explored throughout the research. Maintaining a good physical health is something everyone desires. Nobody desires to be physically unhealthy, it’s just that not everybody has the motivation to stay or get healthy. Physical health is achieved by maintaining fitness and health through exercise and proper nourishment. Thus, having good physical health improves an individual’s overall health. Out of physical, emotional, social, intellectual, spiritual and environmental health, physical health is the most visible. There are multiple different possibilities for the motivation, or lack thereof.
