To begin to understand how one is motivated to maintain their physical health, keep a healthy nutritional diet, or to keep exercising, one must know what motivation is. While it is difficult to define, a simple explanation can be presented. The study of motivation concerns those internal processes that give behavior its energy, direction, and persistence. Within energy, direction, and persistence, behavior gains strength, purpose, and endurance. To maintain physical health, nutrition, and exercise energy/strength, direction/purpose, and persistence/endurance are all needed. One key way to keep motivation in these situations is by setting goals. The effect of goal setting in relation to motivation will be explored throughout the research. …show more content…
Nobody desires to be physically unhealthy, it’s just that not everybody has the motivation to stay or get healthy. Physical health is achieved by maintaining fitness and health through exercise and proper nourishment. Thus, having good physical health improves an individual’s overall health. Out of physical, emotional, social, intellectual, spiritual and environmental health, physical health is the most visible. There are multiple different possibilities for the motivation, or lack thereof. Lack of motivation could be due to anxiety of hitting the gym, low self confidence, lack of knowledge on how to be healthy and many more. One key component to determining an individual’s motivation for physical health is age. It has been shown that exercise for elderly people are intrinsically uninteresting (Gallagher & Keenan, 2000). Since there is no internal need to improve or maintain physical health, another motivation must be found. In this particular case, incentives, consequences, or awards must be used. It has been proven that those with higher motivation to eat right, exercise more, and have a good physical health lead to happiness and greater psychological health as a whole. If you look good, you feel good, vice versa. There are many distractions in life that distract individuals away from their goals of maintaining health. But, with a strict plan in place, the support of friends, family, co-workers, one can stay on the path to greatness. Motivation comes from internal sources and external sources. An internal source of motivation would be if an individual thinks they are gaining weight and would like to stay in a size 4 clothing. An external source would be, for example, if an individual’s athletic coach told them they were gaining weight. Then, the individual would be motivated to lose weight because their coach wants them to, not because they feel personally that they want to. While there are many possible explanations and ways an individual stays motivated, motivation still remains as something that is difficult to define specifically.
