Argumentative Essay: Does The Exercise Cure?

The Exercise Cure Prescription drug cost for treatment and preventative disease amounts to billions of dollars each year for Americans. However, there is one prescription that could be prescribed that would assist with treatment and prevention, it’s called exercise, and it’s totally free. Sports Medicine Physician, Jordan D. Metzl, M.D., from the Hospital for Special Surgery of New York City, insists that exercise is sort of a magic pill, and it adds increased health and wellness value to the entire body, both mentally and physically(Metzl). He goes on to state, every patient should be prescribed exercise, but adds that most patients lack the motivation, and will somehow need an incentive in order to exercise(Metzl). Exercise, when done on a regular basis, has shown better outcomes with patient results in clinical lab test. Other physiological test such as brain function studies, have also shown improvements in areas of memory and concentration, due to consistent exercise regiments. Jordan D. A prescription of exercise alone will not help a patient if the patient is not motivated, or if the patient does not have any incentives or the need to exercise. Jordan D. Metzl, M.D. claims, “[s]eventy percent of Americans are overweight, 30 percent are obese, and only a very small fraction exercise for the 150 minutes per week recommended by the American Heart Association”(Metzl). Studies have been conducted on patient groups in order to evaluate different incentive structures for exercise and weight loss. There was initial short term success with incentive structured programs, but the long term success diminished whenever the incentive programs were removed.
