The new definition of Love, introduced by Barbara Fredrickson, in “Love 2.0,” not only presents the scientific analyzes of the brain’s response to positive connections, but also a unique perspective of what love actually is. The unfamiliar standpoint about how love is “forever renewable” (108) and how “[it is] not unconditional” (108) refines how love is interpreted and perceived. Fredrickson presents an ongoing juxtaposition from both ends of love and strongly states that “love is a single act performed by two brains,” (113). It is true that micro-moments of love lead to good health, but love relationships and long-term health in light of this micro moment emphasis – especially – are never constant and are always changing; simply because one …show more content…
If “love is connection” (118) then all positive connections made throughout the day would be considered as love, again, which is completely misleading. If there isn’t a special way you feel about some certain people in your life, which is usually labeled as love, then what is the difference between loving your dear ones and loving complete strangers who you seem to connect with? If love is what Fredrickson says it is, then there should be boundaries to what extend individuals love others. In relationships, we often try to give more than we receive, and love relationship, in light of micro-moment, are most likely “far shorter than we typically think” (108). If the brain activity due to positive connection is what spurs love, then the time period that two brains are in connection and two people are in love is awfully short. The love relationship will definitely not last for a long time and will be unreliable when in the light of micro- moment. There will be no trust and no loyalty in a “micro- moment” love – relationship because any two brains can automatically connect allowing one to fall in love with everyone he or she …show more content…
Helping out a peer or just complimenting a stranger who walk by you is positivity. Yet at the same time, going to bed on time and waking up to a non-hectic morning can also promote well and a maintainable health approach. There are many ways to maintain good health and love is just one of them. Nevertheless, people with high vagal tone “are more flexible across a whole host of domains – physical, mental, and social” (119) and, “they experience more micro- moments of love” (119). Fredrickson emphasizes that the best way to increase vagal tone is “the power of love” (119), however these micro-moments, reoccur many times and are not “unconditional” like how we normally define love to be. This is simply because again there is constant change in people’s connections. If the micro – moments of love are not received or given, an individual might not be able to acquire the high vagal tone that is needed to maintain and balance a healthy life. The health benefits of this type of love are only temporary. However, she mentions that one can self- generate love to increase his or her vagal tone, but this can also be quiet different in every attempt and approach. The method of self- generating love can vary from time to time, which emphasizes how the person’s individuality and approach to good health is varying.
